Bakersfield is the county seat of Kern County, California, in the United States. Bakersfield is located in southern California, about 100 miles north of the Los Angeles area.
As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 247,057. The city's economy thrives on agriculture, petroleum extraction, and refining.
It is one of the fastest growing of the larger cities of the United States. Bakersfield may not be California's premiere tourist destination, but venture away from glut of chain stores and fast food lining Interstate 5, and you'll find a surprisingly old-fashioned community.
Just two hours away from glitzy Los Angeles, Bakersfield is a town of stock car races and downtown murals, honky-tonk bars and working farmers.
The rolling farms and countless oil deckers surrounding Bakersfield indicate its two biggest industries, but another is less visually obvious: a brand of country music that has become known as "the Bakersfield sound."
Live bands perform at local bars nightly, and big names in the twangy sub-genre frequently come to play. The tradition began when Midwesterners arrived in the area during the Great Depression.
Other outsiders have brought their traditions here as well: a number of Italian and Basque restaurants offer down-home cuisine.

There is also a growing segment of Bakersfield's population that comes to enjoy the surroundings. An hour away is the southern flank of the Sierra Nevada, California's most famous mountain range, and fishing and rafting on the nearby Kern River is also a popular pastime. The Kern River offers an adventurous time of whitewater rafting.
Bakersfield enjoys a wide variety of entertainment with the convention center, theaters, museums, and art galleries.
Bakersfield residents are very active in sports, taking advantage of 2 lakes, 5 private and 6 public golf courses, 6 private and 13 public tennis facilities, 5 private country clubs, 2 roller skating rinks, and one ice rink, 3 bowling facilities, 3 auto race tracks and over 50 neighborhood community parks.
The community has its own minor league baseball team, The Bakersfield Blaze, ice hockey team The Fog, and a soccer park where local, regional, and state tournaments are held. Bakersfield also has over 300 churches and 28 libraries.
